We used a bostitch air compressor and nail gun and 1 and 3 8 inch 18 gauge nails to nail the plywood planks into the ceiling.
How to wood plank a popcorn ceiling.
Scraping the popcorn ceiling is not that hard of a job all you need is a spray bottle with water a 6 inch scraper and a cheap drywall mud pan.
We got 6 planks out of each sheet of plywood.
Between each row we used a nickel for a spacer.
This created just a small line between the planks to make them more visible yet not allow any of the popcorn texture to show through.
The wetter it is the easier it is to come off.
Take your first piece of wood and make sure to apply your adhesive to the backside of the board from there set the board in place and line it up across the joists.
And for a little extra security we ll squirt some liquid nails on the back side of each plank too.
Before we started the ceiling ed cut all the plywood into 8 planks.
He made a sled shown below to speed up the process.
This meant that once the planks were nailed up we were done.
Then i gave one side of each plank 2 coats of paint.
Cover your floor and spray a small section of the ceiling let sit for a minute or so and while holding the mud tray under the scraper start scrapping letting the plaster fall into the tray.
You want to make sure that your planks run perpendicular to the joists in the popcorn ceiling.
It s still covered in popcorn but since we re doing the planks we didn t see any point in scraping it all off we ll just find the ceiling joists with a stud finder mark them with chalk lines and nail gun them into the joists.
As long as the ceiling is wet there will be no dust.
